Character Design Process

Developing a new character is always a welcome challenge and when the character is part of a team even more so. Sometimes the direction is clear and as an illustrator its all about transferring what your imagine from being inspired by the brief. For this fellow, part of the Sustainables Academy Team the initial sketch in pencil was almost there, all he needed was refinement.

Left, My initial concept in pencil, followed by a coloured up concept in the centre. The final design drawn up in pen and ink and coloured up on Photoshop.

As he’s a character the represents metal use, he needed to be outwardly made of metal, though I avoided making him look to robotic as I felt that would be the wrong look. Its these choices along the way that help enrich the look of the character and I feel that the best results come from a good dialog between the client and myself. If you have an idea you’d like visualised please get in touch.
